ABBOTSFORD, B.C. – A youth is facing multiple charges after attempting to flee from police in west Abbotsford on Friday evening.

Around 5:00 p.m., members of the Abbotsford Police Gang Crime Unit (GCU) were conducting proactive patrols when they observed a blue Tesla travelling at 80 km/h in a 50 km/h zone near BlueJay Street and Blueridge Drive.

When officers attempted a traffic stop, the driver failed to pull over and fled the scene at excessive speeds. GCU officers quickly located the vehicle a short distance away and apprehended the driver, who was identified as a youth.

The individual now faces charges of Excessive Speed, Driving Without Due Care, and Failing to Stop for Police. The youth also received an 18-month driving suspension, and the Tesla has been seized as offence-related property, pending forfeiture proceedings.

Police say reckless driving and refusing to stop for officers are serious offences that put lives at risk. The Abbotsford Police Department emphasized that its officers will continue to take a zero-tolerance approach toward dangerous driving and youth involved in such reckless behaviour.
