New York  — U.S. President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to impose significant tariffs on Mexico, Canada, and China immediately upon taking office on January 20th. In a post on Truth Social, Trump outlined his intention to introduce a 25% tariff on all products from Mexico and Canada, citing concerns over illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Additionally, he proposed a 10% tariff on Chinese imports, accusing Beijing of failing to curb the flow of fentanyl and other illicit drugs into the U.S.

“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump wrote.

Trump stated that these tariffs would remain in place until Mexico and Canada take stricter measures to combat the movement of drugs and undocumented migrants across their borders. He also called out China for allegedly not doing enough to halt the production and trafficking of illicit substances.

“Until such time as they stop, we will be charging China an additional 10% Tariff, above any additional Tariffs, on all of their many products coming into the United States of America,” he added.

The proposed tariffs are expected to generate significant economic and political debate as analysts evaluate their potential impact on trade, supply chains, and diplomatic relations. Critics argue that the measures could lead to retaliatory actions and higher costs for American consumers, while supporters see them as a strong stance against illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

This announcement marks one of the first major policy declarations by the president-elect since his victory in the 2024 election.
