Langley–Surrey, BC – A high-risk police operation involving multiple law enforcement agencies ended with the dramatic arrest of a suspect who drove a suspected stolen semi-truck into the Fraser River late Wednesday night.
The coordinated effort between Langley RCMP, Surrey Provincial Operational Support Unit (SPOSU), and the Lower Mainland District Integrated Emergency Response Team (LMD-IERT) began on the evening of May 14, 2025. Around 7:35 p.m., Langley RCMP’s Special Response Team identified a semi-truck with mismatched license plates in the area of 24 Avenue and 206 Street. The vehicle was later confirmed to be stolen.
Just after midnight, officers attempted a traffic stop with support from Integrated Police Dog Services. The 40-year-old male driver responded aggressively, ramming one police vehicle and initiating a dangerous chase that put both the public and officers at serious risk.
Despite multiple attempts by police to disengage, the suspect continued ramming patrol vehicles before fleeing at high speed. A tire deflation device deployed by Langley’s Special Response Team successfully punctured the truck’s front right tire, but the suspect remained on the run.
The chase intensified as the truck entered Surrey, speeding through residential areas, running red lights, and narrowly avoiding collisions. A second spike belt deployed by SPOSU disabled the truck’s rear tires, but the driver continued recklessly, eventually heading northbound on 176 Street to Highway 17 and into the Bridgeview area.
The pursuit ended when the suspect drove the semi-truck into a public dock area filled with bystanders and launched the vehicle off an embankment into the Fraser River. He fled the submerged vehicle on foot but was swiftly arrested with the help of LMD-IERT.
“This was an incredibly dangerous situation involving a suspect who showed zero regard for public safety or the lives of our officers,” said Sergeant Zynal Sharoom, Media Relations Officer for Langley RCMP. “Thanks to the skill, coordination, and professionalism of multiple policing units, this individual was safely taken into custody without injury to the public or police.”
The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues. Langley RCMP is urging anyone with information who has not yet spoken to authorities to contact them and reference file number 2025-14838.
