Surrey, BC – An 18-year-old Surrey man has learned a costly lesson after ending his motorcycle season early with thousands of dollars in fines, insurance penalties, and a week-long vehicle impound—following a reckless high-speed ride in full view of police.

At approximately 8:40 p.m. on October 6, 2025, a blue Yamaha motorcycle caught the attention of BC Highway Patrol officers when it passed a marked police cruiser on Highway 1 near the Port Mann Bridge in Surrey. Officers recorded the motorcycle travelling at 187 km/h in a 100 km/h zone, weaving across several lanes of traffic, crossing solid white lines, and changing lanes without signalling.

“The rider told police, ‘I thought I lost you,’” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “Apparently, he didn’t know about police cameras, radar, and radios. You will face consequences for speeding no matter what, but you make things much worse when you double down on dangerous driving right in front of police.”

Police said the young rider was wearing only baggy jeans, a T-shirt, and a helmet—no protective motorcycle gear. He received multiple fines under the BC Motor Vehicle Act (MVA), including $483 for excessive speeding, $109 for changing lanes over a solid line, $109 for changing lanes without signalling, $109 for failing to display an “L” sign, and $109 for driving contrary to restrictions by operating the motorcycle after sunset. In addition, the motorcycle was impounded for seven days, along with towing and storage costs.

As a Class 7 “Learner” driver, the teen is not permitted to accumulate any penalty points, meaning a driving prohibition from the BC Superintendent of Motor Vehicles is now likely.

“We’re happy this young rider survived his behaviour,” said Corporal McLaughlin. “His lack of meaningful safety gear left zero margin for error. Now he has a chance to learn some valuable lessons by feeling the sting of the fines.”

BC Highway Patrol reminds all new riders to respect posted speed limits, follow licensing restrictions, and wear full protective gear whenever operating a motorcycle.
