Surrey, BC – With Halloween and Diwali falling on the same day this year, Surrey RCMP is issuing a series of safety reminders to ensure that everyone in the community enjoys the festivities safely. In collaboration with the City of Surrey Bylaws Enforcement Team, local authorities will be actively working to maintain public safety during the dual celebrations.

According to city bylaws, fireworks are not allowed to be sold, purchased, or used without a valid permit from the Surrey Fire Service Fire Prevention Branch. Those found selling or setting off fireworks without a permit will face increased fines and the seizure of the fireworks.

For those witnessing the illegal use of fireworks, the city’s bylaws office can be contacted at 604-591-4370 until 1:00 am on November 1. After this time, non-emergency complaints can be directed to Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502. The RCMP also urges the public to reserve 911 for emergency calls only.

Surrey RCMP is emphasizing the importance of discussing safety measures with family members, particularly children who plan to go trick-or-treating or visit places of worship for Diwali celebrations.
Key safety tips include:

– Carrying a flashlight.
– Planning a route that includes well-lit streets and using sidewalks and crosswalks.
– Having emergency contact information on hand.
– Avoiding face masks that could obstruct vision.
– Leaving any fake weaponry at home.
– Wearing reflective clothing and using marked crosswalks to ensure visibility to drivers.
– Drivers should exercise extra caution when reversing out of driveways and at intersections.
– Inspecting treats before consuming them.

Surrey RCMP’s Media Relations Officer, Cpl. Sarbjit K. Sangha, shared a festive message: “Surrey RCMP wishes everyone in the community a Spooktacular Halloween and Prosperous Diwali.”

For more information on fireworks bylaws or safety tips, residents are encouraged to visit the City of Surrey website or contact local authorities for assistance.
