Surrey, BC – The City of Surrey has officially proclaimed September 6, 2025, as “Jaswant Singh Khalra Day”, honouring the late Sikh human rights activist and civil rights defender.
The proclamation, signed by Mayor Brenda Locke, recognizes Khalra’s enduring legacy as a strong advocate for human rights and democratic freedoms. Khalra, widely respected across the Sikh community and beyond, was killed in 1995 for exposing widespread human rights abuses in Punjab.
“Jaswant Singh Khalra died fighting for the dignity and human rights of the Sikhs and others,” the proclamation reads, noting that his contributions are commemorated annually by Sikh communities across Canada.
The City of Surrey emphasized that the declaration also reflects Surrey’s respect for Sikh history and culture, as well as its ongoing commitment to social justice and strong ties with the Sikh community.
It is also notable that the Government of British Columbia has announced a province-wide recognition of Jaswant Singh Khalra Day on September 6, further highlighting his legacy and the importance of his work.
Khalra’s courage and sacrifice continue to inspire human rights defenders worldwide, and the proclamation ensures his legacy will remain a part of Surrey’s civic and cultural history.
