Surrey, BC – The Surrey Police Service (SPS) is alerting residents to a surge in distraction thefts that have been occurring across the city since January 1, 2025. Multiple incidents have been reported, with suspects using various tactics to deceive victims and steal money or valuables.

SPS and the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) are actively investigating these crimes, which have taken place in different locations throughout Surrey. While suspect and vehicle descriptions vary, police have identified several common methods used in these thefts:

•   Gas Money Scam: Suspects approach victims claiming they need gas money, convincing them to provide cash on the spot or withdraw money from their bank accounts.

•   Fake Gold & iPhone Sales: Scammers offer gold jewelry or iPhones for sale. After the transaction, victims later discover that the gold is fake and the phone is non-functional.

•   Jewelry Swap: A suspect distracts a victim and stealthily removes their real jewelry, replacing it with worthless costume jewelry.

SPS is urging residents to stay vigilant, be aware of their surroundings, and avoid engaging in transactions with strangers in public places. Police also advise anyone who notices suspicious individuals or vehicles following them to contact SPS immediately.

Authorities are reminding the public to refrain from purchasing items from unknown individuals or unreliable sources. Anyone with information on these incidents is encouraged to report it to the Surrey Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
