Surrey, B.C. – At its upcoming Regular Council Meeting on April 14, Surrey City Council is set to vote on a proposal to expand parking for commercial trucks, potentially adding 240 new spaces to the city’s growing inventory of designated truck parking.

The proposed expansion would be located on a 4.04-hectare portion of City-owned land at 19230 20 Avenue, part of a larger 15.5-hectare vacant property. If approved, the new lot would bring the total number of designated truck parking spaces in Surrey to approximately 390.

“City Council has not only made commercial truck parking a priority, but we are taking action on it,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “The site proposed would add 240 new truck parking spaces on top of the existing 150 spaces that this Council has put into place. Trucking is our economy on wheels, and the drivers deserve to have a place to safely and legally park their big rigs. Expanding the number of designated truck parking lots in Surrey only makes good sense.”

If greenlit, this would mark the fifth truck parking lot designated by Surrey City Council within the past 12 months, reflecting an ongoing commitment to addressing longstanding parking challenges faced by the commercial trucking sector.

“The lack of designated truck parking has long been a source of frustration for Surrey’s commercial truck drivers, often resulting in bylaw infractions, safety concerns, and negative impacts on businesses and residents,” said Joey Jatinder Singh Brar, General Manager of Corporate Services. “The proposed new lot would help to alleviate the pressure of finding legal parking for commercial trucks. The City-owned property is currently vacant and non-revenue generating, which makes it an ideal site to convert into a dedicated commercial truck parking lot.”

The City had previously approved four temporary truck parking sites on March 11, 2024. Positive feedback from the trucking community and a noticeable decrease in unauthorized parking have encouraged the City to expand the initiative with this proposed fifth site.
