Surrey, BC – Fleetwood–Port Kells MP Gurbux Saini took a strong stand in the House of Commons, reaffirming the federal government’s commitment to protecting the religious freedoms of all Canadians, as guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Addressing the chamber, Saini condemned legislation such as Quebec’s Bill 21, which restricts public servants from wearing religious symbols like hijabs, turbans, or other faith-based attire. He emphasized that such laws undermine the principles of equality and inclusion at the core of Canada’s identity.
“When legislation like Quebec’s Bill 21 threatens to restrict the rights of Canadians in public office — whether it’s wearing hijabs, turbans, or other religious symbols — it’s our responsibility to challenge it,” said Saini.
The Surrey MP also called out Members of the Official Opposition who have supported motions that, in his view, erode the religious freedoms of visible minority communities.
“Our government is dedicated to standing up for the rights and dignity of every Canadian. Because when we fail to protect the rights of some, we weaken the freedoms of all,” Saini added.
Saini’s remarks come amid ongoing national debate over religious expression, diversity, and equality in public service, reinforcing the government’s stance on safeguarding fundamental rights for all Canadians.
