Ottawa, ON – In a concerted effort to combat rising crime trends in Surrey, B.C., Mayor Brenda Locke and Councillor Rob Stutt met with Canada’s Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree this week in Ottawa. Also in attendance were Surrey MPs Randeep Sarai and Sukh Dhaliwal. The delegation focused on urgent public safety issues, including extortion threats and gun violence.

“Councillor Rob Stutt and I were pleased to visit Ottawa and meet with Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree along with Surrey MPs Randeep Sarai and Sukh Dhaliwal, to discuss our shared commitment to addressing recent crime trends,” said Mayor Locke in a post from her official X account. “Collaboration at the national level is vital to ensure safer communities for all Surrey residents. Together, we’re working towards effective strategies and meaningful action.”

MP Randeep Sarai echoed the Mayor’s sentiments, calling the meeting “productive” and highlighting the urgency of addressing public safety in Surrey.

“Our government will make resources available for local police to keep Surrey safe,” Sarai said, referencing the need for enhanced support to tackle extortion and gun-related crime in the region.

The meeting marks a significant step toward greater intergovernmental collaboration as Surrey faces mounting pressure to ensure public safety and community confidence.
