Surrey, BC – The City of Surrey has launched its first-ever ‘Age Friendly Action Plan’ a major initiative aimed at supporting residents aged 55 and older in leading healthier, more active, and engaged lives. Developed in collaboration with the Surrey Age Friendly Network and shaped by community feedback, the action plan is designed to ensure Surrey remains inclusive, welcoming, and accessible for all its older adults.
“The Age Friendly Action Plan aims to enhance the well-being and vitality of older adults in Surrey, empowering them to lead active and fulfilling lives,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “This comprehensive plan reflects our commitment to fostering a community that prioritizes critical needs such as safety, transportation, housing, and accessibility. Council is taking a leadership role in building an age-friendly city, and we look forward to making this vision a reality.”
The plan’s four key focus areas are:
1.Safety, Health, and Wellness: Ensuring seniors remain active and engaged in their communities with practices that prevent isolation.
2.Transportation:Offering seniors a range of safe, convenient, and affordable transportation options.
3.Housing: Providing seniors with access to affordable, appropriate housing, and the necessary support to maintain independence.
4.Buildings and Outdoor Spaces:Designing public spaces, buildings, and outdoor areas to be safe, welcoming, and accessible to all.
The City of Surrey is forming partnerships across all sectors to address the evolving needs of its 55+ residents and is working closely with community organizations to implement the plan in the coming years. The ‘Age Friendly Action Plan’ is supported by the Age-Friendly Communities Grant from BC Healthy Communities.
