SURREY, B.C. – The City of Surrey has officially commenced construction on a key infrastructure project to widen 64 Avenue between 152 Street and 164 Street. This $10 million initiative will expand the corridor from two to four lanes and include a new multi-use pathway, improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists and easing traffic congestion in the rapidly growing city.
The work represents the final phase of a long-term plan to transform 64 Avenue into a continuous four-lane east-west corridor stretching from 120 Street in Delta to 196 Street in Langley. Once complete, the project will enhance regional connectivity and boost road safety across several neighbourhoods, including Newton and Cloverdale.
“I’m proud our Council is completing essential road projects like 64 Avenue, a vital east-west corridor connecting Newton and Cloverdale communities,” said Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke. “By prioritizing strategic infrastructure investments, we’re addressing the needs of our rapidly growing city, reducing traffic delays, enhancing road safety, and strengthening connectivity to ensure Surrey remains a livable, thriving community for all residents.”
Key upgrades in this phase of the project include:
- Widening the road from two to four lanes;
- Installing a multi-use pathway on the south side for cycling and walking;
- Paving work on 152 Street between 64 Avenue and 68 Avenue;
- Railway crossing repairs at the 64 Avenue and 152 Street intersection.
To expedite the railway crossing resurfacing, a temporary closure of 152 Street near the 64 Avenue intersection will be required.
Rafael Villerreal, Director of Transportation for the City of Surrey, highlighted the project’s regional importance: “The widening of 64 Avenue between 152 and 164 Streets completes the final missing link in a continuous four-lane corridor stretching from Delta to Langley. As a designated truck route and key east-west arterial, this upgrade enhances regional goods movement, supports local traffic, and improves safety and connectivity for all road users with the addition of a new multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.”
The construction from 152 Street to 164 Street is expected to be completed in 2026. Meanwhile, work on the earlier phase from 177B Street to 184 Street is nearing completion.
This initiative is part of Surrey Council’s larger $446 million investment in roads and transit over the next five years to keep the city moving and connected.
