Surrey, BC– During Monday’s Regular Council Meeting, Surrey City Council voted to significantly raise fines associated with the sale and illegal use of fireworks in the lead-up to Halloween and Diwali.
“The increase in fines is in response to the significant surge in complaints related to fireworks,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “The illegal use of fireworks poses severe risks, including injuries, property damage, and distress to animals. We are taking steps to ensure the safety of our residents by deterring illegal activity.”
Fireworks in Surrey require federal certification and permits from the Surrey Fire Service. Joey Jatinder Singh Brar, General Manager of Corporate Services, noted that the new penalties will enhance law enforcement capabilities: “These changes give bylaw officers and police the tools they need to better manage firework risks.”
Key changes include:
– Raising minimum penalties for fireworks violations from $100 to $400.
– Increasing maximum fines from $5,000 to $50,000.
– Maximum MTI fine raised to $1,000 to support enforcement efforts.
