Surrey, BC – At Monday’s Regular Council Meeting, Surrey Council approved a $1.2 million contract for the demolition of the former North Surrey Recreation Centre, marking a pivotal step in the development of the much-anticipated Centre Block project.
The Centre Block will feature two high-rise commercial office towers, ground-level retail units, and a vibrant public plaza, transforming the heart of Surrey’s City Centre into a dynamic hub of activity.
“Centre Block is more than just a redevelopment project. It will be the catalyst for economic growth, innovation, and community engagement in our ever-expanding City Centre,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “It is a vibrant, accessible, and modern urban centre near rapid transit and major transportation routes. This project reflects our continued civic investment in the downtown core and will advance Surrey’s long-term economic goals.”
Led by Surrey City Development Corporation (SCDC), Centre Block is poised to become a groundbreaking office and institutional complex. Located adjacent to one of the region’s busiest transit hubs, the project aligns with Surrey’s vision of establishing City Centre as the region’s second downtown core.
“The demolition of the old North Surrey Recreation Centre marks the start of a new era,” Locke added. “This milestone project will enhance the downtown landscape with modern office space and retail options, while fostering community engagement through the public plaza.”
The former North Surrey Recreation Centre, located at 10275 City Parkway, will undergo phased demolition starting in early 2025, with completion expected by summer 2025. The process will prioritize safety and environmental compliance, including the careful removal of hazardous materials. Arena 1 will be the first to be demolished, followed by Arena 2 and the Pool, due to their proximity to the SkyTrain line and Surrey Central bus loop.
Traffic control measures and strategic scheduling will be implemented to minimize disruption during the demolition phase.
