Surrey, B.C. –  Surrey City Council has approved the next phase of a key infrastructure initiative aimed at easing traffic congestion and supporting growth in South Surrey. At Monday’s Regular Council meeting, Council voted to advance the 24 Avenue and Highway 99 Interchange Ramps project to the detailed design stage.

Developed in partnership with the Province of British Columbia, the project will add north-facing access and exit ramps along Highway 99, improving traffic flow and connectivity for the rapidly expanding community.

“South Surrey is one of our fastest growing communities with significant housing development underway,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “This project will enhance connectivity, improve safety, and increase traffic flow along this vital corridor. I’m proud of our collaboration with the Province to deliver a practical, affordable solution that supports regional mobility and economic growth. The new Costco proposal is an example of the strong business interest in the area.”

Council also advanced the land-use proposal for a new Costco store at 164 Street and 20 Avenue, granting it first and second readings. A public hearing is scheduled for November, giving residents an opportunity to provide feedback before the project moves forward to third reading.

In addition, the City is moving ahead with plans to construct the 20 Avenue Overpass of Highway 99, which will include two vehicle lanes in each direction and a multiuse path for pedestrians and cyclists. Early works such as utility relocations and tree clearing are already underway, with construction expected to begin in January 2025 once the contract is awarded.

As South Surrey continues to expand, the City of Surrey remains focused on ensuring transportation infrastructure keeps pace with the community’s residential and economic growth.
