Surrey- In a significant step towards supporting cultural practices and honoring loved ones, Surrey City Council has approved plans to build a dedicated pier for the scattering of ashes on the Fraser River. The vote, held during Monday night’s council meeting, received widespread support, with the city emphasizing the need for a space where families can grieve and pay tribute in a meaningful way.
“Our community deserves a space where families can honor their loved ones in a meaningful way,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “This project reflects our commitment to supporting residents in their most vulnerable times and will respect cultural practices that are intrinsic to the grief and healing process.”
The council is currently considering two locations for the pier: a $3.8 million pier at Brownsville Bar Park or a $2.5 million pier at the Surrey Public Wharf. Both locations would offer residents a serene, accessible spot along the Fraser River to scatter ashes, a practice that is important to many cultural and religious traditions.
A final decision on the location is expected in the coming months, with strong community input anticipated to shape the choice. The project marks a meaningful addition to Surrey’s ongoing efforts to provide services that support the emotional and cultural needs of its residents.
