Surrey, BC – In a significant step toward celebrating cultural diversity, Surrey City Council unanimously approved Mayor Brenda Locke’s motion to collaborate with the provincial government to establish the Canadians of South Asian Heritages Museum or Cultural Centre in the city.
Home to the largest South Asian population in British Columbia, Surrey is the top choice for this initiative, as identified in the Provincial Government’s Engagement Report. The museum aims to honor the history, contributions, and stories of South Asian Canadians, fostering cultural appreciation among residents and visitors alike.
“Surrey is home to a vibrant South Asian community, and Council is committed to collaborating with the province to bring this vision to life,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “This cultural treasure will celebrate the diverse stories and bright future of South Asian Canadians while strengthening our city’s cultural fabric.”
The City has already identified several strategic locations for the museum and is committed to working closely with the Provincial Government, stakeholders, and community members to finalize the plans. The engagement report will guide the project’s purpose, vision, and development.
Surrey is known for its cultural vibrancy, hosting major events like the largest Vaisakhi Parade outside of India and numerous initiatives led by South Asian community organizations. The museum or cultural centre will add to this legacy, providing an invaluable space for education and cultural exchange.
As the next step, Mayor Locke will formally notify the Premier and other relevant Ministers of Surrey’s interest in advancing this project.
The initiative reflects Surrey’s dedication to celebrating its diverse community and creating a lasting tribute to the contributions of South Asian Canadians.
