Surrey- The Surrey Police Service (SPS) is taking action to keep roads safe this holiday season by joining the province-wide “Light Up The Province” CounterAttack campaign. Throughout December, SPS’s Road Safety Section will conduct roving road checks across Surrey, focusing on removing drug- and alcohol-impaired drivers from the streets.

Drivers stopped at CounterAttack locations will be required to show their licences and may undergo mandatory roadside testing.

Staff Sergeant Lindsey Houghton, Senior Media Relations Officer for SPS, emphasized the campaign’s importance. “The start of December means a lot of people will be attending social gatherings where drugs and alcohol may be consumed,” said Houghton. “While most drivers act responsibly, a few still choose to drive impaired, putting lives at risk. Impaired driving-related collisions are preventable, yet they continue to cause injuries and fatalities. SPS will adopt a zero-tolerance approach to impaired driving this season.”

SPS encourages everyone to plan ahead by using designated drivers, ride-sharing services, or public transit if consuming intoxicants. The campaign aims to ensure a safer holiday season for all Surrey residents and visitors.
