Chandigarh- A day after a faction of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders revolted against its chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, the party’s working committee declared its support for Badal’s leadership on Wednesday. The committee also urged party members not to be swayed by the enemies of the ‘panth’.

In a statement, the working committee highlighted a “dangerous conspiracy to disturb peace and communal harmony” and accused detractors of trying to pin the blame on Sikhs. They cautioned the ‘panth’ and Punjabis about these threats.

The meeting, held in Chandigarh, saw attendance from prominent party leaders including Balwinder Singh Bhundar, Daljit Singh Cheema, Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal, Hira Singh Gabria, Janmeja Singh Sekhon, SGPC chief Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, and Paramjit Singh Sarna. The committee stressed that peace is essential for the progress and prosperity of the people and expressed full confidence in Badal’s leadership.

The party vowed to intensify efforts towards genuine federalism and appealed to dissenting members to adhere to party decorum, urging them to express their views within party platforms only. In a post on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), SAD condemned the attacks on Sikhs and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the community.

This development follows calls from some senior SAD leaders on Tuesday for Badal to step down as party chief after the party’s poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections in Punjab.
