New Delhi – In a tragic incident early this morning, the roof of Terminal 1 at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi collapsed during the first pre-monsoon rain of the season. Several cars were trapped under the debris, resulting in one fatality and at least six serious injuries.
Officials reported that the collapse involved the roof sheet and support beams, which came crashing down onto four cars parked in the pick-up and drop area of the terminal. The incident, reported to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) around 5:30 am, has raised significant concerns about infrastructure safety at one of the busiest airports in the world.
Terminal 1, which serves domestic flights operated by IndiGo and SpiceJet, is part of a larger complex that includes Terminals 2 and 3. The airport handles approximately 1,400 flight movements daily, underscoring the critical nature of this facility.
Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, visited the site to inspect the damage and oversee the emergency response. Describing the incident as “very serious,” the minister announced compensation for the family of the deceased and those injured.
Rescue operations are ongoing, and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collapse and prevent future incidents.
