Richmond, B.C. – Richmond RCMP arrested 15 individuals during a single-day operation targeting retail theft in the city’s downtown core. The proactive enforcement effort, part of the RCMP’s ongoing “Boost and Bust” initiative, resulted in the recovery of more than $5,000 in stolen merchandise.
Of those arrested, most were from outside Richmond, with one individual being arrested twice at different locations. Two of the suspects were youth. While criminal charges are typically recommended in these cases, alternative measures may be considered for young offenders.
The “Boost and Bust” initiative is supported by the Provincial Government’s Community Safety and Targeted Enforcement Program (CSTEP), which provides funding to expand these operations throughout the year, particularly as the holiday shopping season approaches.
Richmond RCMP Crime Analysts have identified retail theft as an ongoing problem in the downtown core.
“Retail theft is not a victimless crime. It affects store staff, business owners, and the broader community,” said Corporal Pierre Beauchamp of the Richmond RCMP Property Crime Unit. “Much of this activity is organized, and stolen goods—including food and health products—are often resold through unsafe, unregulated channels. These operations are not only illegal but create serious health and safety risks. We will continue to identify and disrupt those involved in this type of crime.”
Richmond RCMP’s bike and foot patrol units continue to provide a visible police presence in the downtown area, serving as both a deterrent to criminal activity and a source of reassurance for residents and businesses. The detachment also works closely with retailers to strengthen crime prevention measures, offering advice on security and environmental design improvements.
Richmond RCMP is urging residents and business owners to report suspicious activity promptly. For crimes in progress, call 9-1-1.
