Chandigarh-On the orders of the Punjab & Haryana High Court, the Punjab Government has reinstated IPS officer Paramraj Singh Umranangal in service with immediate effect. Umranangal was previously suspended in connection with the Behbal Kalan firing case, a controversial incident that had significant political and social repercussions in the state.
The High Court’s decision to quash Umranangal’s suspension has paved the way for his return to duty. As per the court’s directive, Umranangal will report to the Office of the Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, for the assignment of duties until regular posting orders are issued.
The reinstatement has sparked reactions across the political spectrum. Supporters of Umranangal argue that the High Court’s decision vindicates the officer, while critics continue to demand accountability for the Behbal Kalan incident.
The Behbal Kalan firing case, which occurred in 2015, involved police firing on protesters, resulting in casualties and widespread condemnation. The incident has remained a sensitive and polarizing issue in Punjab’s political and social landscape.
Umranangal’s reinstatement marks a significant development in the ongoing discourse surrounding the case.
As Paramraj Singh Umranangal prepares to resume his duties, the focus now shifts to the next steps in the legal and administrative processes related to his role and responsibilities within the Punjab Police.
