Ottawa, ON – Canadians could be heading to the polls as early as April 28, as Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to dissolve Parliament on Sunday and call a federal election, according to sources.
Carney, who was sworn in as prime minister just last week, is expected to meet with Governor General Mary Simon at Rideau Hall on Sunday to formally request the dissolution of Parliament. The election date is yet to be confirmed but is likely to be held on April 28 or May 5.
Carney recently secured the Liberal leadership after winning the race to replace outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January. Despite his swift rise, it remains unclear which riding Carney will run in, as he does not currently hold a seat in the House of Commons.
Early polling suggests that Liberal support has surged since Carney took over as leader. However, he faces a strong challenge from Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who has been leading the opposition since 2022.
With the election now imminent, Canadians can expect an intense campaign as Carney and Poilievre go head-to-head for the country’s top political office.
