Surrey, B.C. – Pistachios sold at KabulVan Supermarket on King George Boulevard are being recalled after being linked to a salmonella outbreak under investigation by Health Canada.
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the recall covers pistachio kernels sold in bulk or in variable-size packages between March 31 and August 13. Customers are urged to return the products to the store or dispose of them immediately.
Health officials warn that salmonella contamination is not always visible, as affected food may look and smell normal. Symptoms of infection can include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and headache. While most people recover within days, young children, seniors, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems face greater risk of serious illness, including long-term complications such as severe arthritis.
This latest Surrey recall is part of a broader nationwide investigation that has triggered recalls in Ontario, Quebec, B.C., and New Brunswick. As of Tuesday, the Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed 62 cases tied to the outbreak, including five in B.C.. Quebec has seen the highest number of cases with 45. Ten people have been hospitalized, though no deaths have been reported.
