Openion – The Cost of Standing Still: Surrey’s Deadly Status Quo”

In the wake of another child’s death by automobile, the usual calls for “action” have emerged. While the sentiment is predictable, it misses the bigger picture. Instead of viewing this event as a failure, we should recognize it for what it truly is: a resounding success story of our city’s commitment to inaction.

For years, we have been presented with a menu of tedious solutions: lower speed limits, redesigned roads, bike lanes, bollards, raised crosswalks, improved public transit, and permanent pedestrianized areas. And, with remarkable discipline and bravery, we have consistently chosen to fight against these solutions. This isn’t a lapse in judgment; it’s a deliberate policy choice, and frankly, it’s one we should be proud of.

Think of the effort we’ve saved. Changing our streets would require planning, spending, and worst of all, inconveniencing drivers. Our steadfast refusal to act has protected us from these burdens. We have successfully maintained a system that prioritizes drivers above all else, and the predictable outcomes of that system are simply proof that it is working as designed.

So, let’s stop the performative grief and start the celebration. Let’s give ourselves a collective pat on the back for achieving exactly what we intended: nothing. We have stared change in the face and bravely stood our ground. The next time you hear of a “tragic accident,” I urge you not to feel sadness or anger. Instead, feel a quiet sense of pride. Pride in a community that knows what it values and has the courage to do absolutely nothing to jeopardize it.

Let’s keep up the good work.
