Surrey, B.C. – Starting August 15, 2025, electric vehicle (EV) drivers in B.C. will no longer need an “OK” decal to use high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes.
The provincial government is updating its EVHOV program, allowing access to be determined solely by road signs. This move simplifies the process for EV owners and eliminates administrative delays.
The change applies to plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles. Out-of-province EVs and electric heavy-duty trucks will also be allowed in HOV lanes where signage permits. Hydrogen vehicles, however, will lose their exemption unless they meet the minimum passenger requirement.
The policy update is expected to save the Ministry of Transportation $70,000 annually and supports cleaner, more efficient transportation across the province.
