Surrey ,BC – People in Surrey will soon benefit from major improvements to specialized cardiac and radiology care as new, advanced services come online at Surrey Memorial Hospital. The investment marks a significant step in bringing life-saving medical procedures closer to home for one of B.C.’s fastest-growing communities.
Premier David Eby said the expansion reflects government’s commitment to strengthening Surrey’s health-care system and ending the need for long drives to other cities for essential treatment.
“People living in Surrey deserve health care close to home — not after a long wait or a long drive to another community, but right here in Surrey,” Eby said. “Expanding life-saving services is part of our commitment to building up Surrey’s health-care system so everyone can access the specialized care they need, when they need it.”
First Cardiac Catheterization Suites South of the Fraser
Surrey Memorial Hospital is opening the region’s first cardiac catheterization suites south of the Fraser River. Until now, patients requiring procedures such as angioplasty, diagnostic angiography or invasive coronary imaging had to travel to Royal Columbian Hospital or Vancouver facilities.
With the new suites, patients with angina, heart attacks and coronary artery disease can now be diagnosed and treated in Surrey, supported by their own medical teams and local support networks.
“These new cardiology and radiology suites at Surrey Memorial Hospital will help people in Surrey get the care they need close to home,” said Bowinn Ma, Minister of Infrastructure. “This investment ensures the hospital has the technology required to expand high-quality care and enhance the patient experience for years to come.”
Dr. Dwayne Conway, regional co-director of interventional cardiology for Fraser Health and department head at Surrey Memorial Hospital, called the development a major milestone:
“Timely access to this type of care can make a considerable difference to outcomes. Having it available locally will ease what has been a real concern for patients and families. I’m grateful to the colleagues and staff whose steady commitment brought us here.”
New Cardiac and Radiology Units Coming Online
Starting Monday, Dec. 8, 2025, care teams will begin providing interventional cardiology procedures in the new cardiac catheterization suites. The minimally invasive techniques use small instruments guided through blood vessels, allowing diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions without open surgery.
On Jan. 8, 2026, two new interventional radiology suites will open, expanding access to image-guided procedures. An existing suite will continue operating, bringing the total to five specialized rooms dedicated to cardiac and radiological care.
Together, these investments will strengthen Surrey Memorial Hospital’s role as a critical hub for advanced, life-saving treatment — ensuring residents can get care where they live, when they need it most.
