Vancouver- After more than two decades of transforming online communication, Microsoft has announced that Skype will officially shut down on May 5, 2025. The tech giant is urging users to transition to Microsoft Teams Free, where they can continue their conversations and retain their contacts.
“Starting in May 2025, Skype will no longer be available. Over the coming days, you can sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with your Skype account to stay connected with all your chats and contacts. Thank you for being part of Skype,” Company confirmed on ‘X’.
The end of Skype marks a nostalgic moment in internet history. Launched in 2003, Skype revolutionized digital communication with free voice and video calls, making long-distance conversations more accessible. In 2011, Microsoft acquired the platform for $8.5 billion, its largest-ever purchase at the time. Over the years, Skype was integrated into Office, Xbox, and the now-defunct Windows Phone, but gradually lost prominence to modern alternatives like Zoom, WhatsApp, and Microsoft’s own Teams.
Microsoft’s move signals a shift towards Teams as its primary communication platform, aligning with its broader focus on business and enterprise collaboration. While Skype may be shutting down, its legacy as a pioneer of internet calls and video conferencing will not be forgotten.
