Surrey, B.C. – Surrey’s widely popular $20 tree sale program is returning this summer, with the next online sale launching on August 13, offering residents a chance to buy quality trees at a low cost. The program supports homeowners in planting trees during late summer and early fall—ideal times for tree growth—and contributes directly to enhancing Surrey’s urban forest.
“Surrey’s tree sale program is a great example of how small, individual actions can have a big collective impact,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “By planting and caring for trees, residents are helping to strengthen our natural environment literally in our own backyards. Fall is the perfect time to plant, and I encourage everyone to support our urban forest however they can.”
Since the program moved online in 2020, over 18,700 trees have been sold to the public. Among the most popular varieties are fruit trees, dogwoods, and magnolias, along with a broad mix of shade trees that provide beauty, wildlife habitat, and environmental value year-round.
Beyond their aesthetic value, trees planted through this program contribute to:
- Managing stormwater,
- Improving air quality,
- Providing cooling shade,
- Supporting biodiversity.
With a City target of 30% canopy cover by 2038, public participation is vital—especially since 58% of the tree canopy is on private land.
“Trees are one of the most effective tools we have to combat climate change, cool our neighbourhoods, and support biodiversity,” said Rob Landucci, Surrey’s Urban Forestry Manager. “In the past 20 years, we’ve planted over 275,000 trees on public land and continue to add 15,000 trees annually through various City programs, including our tree sales.”
The final tree sale of 2025 will take place on September 24. To learn more about available tree varieties and pick-up information, visit: surrey.ca/treesale.
