Surrey– Jagrup Brar has set a new record by being elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in British Columbia for the sixth time, representing a constituency in Surrey, Canada. The BC assembly elections were held on October 19, 2024. Brar bagged more than 48% votes from Surrey-Fleetwood riding. Brar has been a long-time active member of the New Democratic Party (NDP) and has chaired the party’s policy-making caucus. In the outgoing NDP government, Jagrup Brar served as the ‘Trade and Commerce Minister,’ playing a crucial role in shaping the province’s economic policies. Originally from the village of Deon in Bathinda district, Punjab, India, Brar’s early education took place in his village school. He went on to excel in basketball during his time as a student at Mohindra College, Patiala. He later completed his post-graduation in Philosophy with distinction as a gold medalist from Punjabi University, Patiala, before immigrating to Canada. After moving to Canada, Brar pursued further studies at a Canadian university and became deeply involved with the NDP. His success in public life has been a source of pride and inspiration, particularly for Punjabis, demonstrating that hard work and determination can lead to great heights in the Western world, even for those from rural backgrounds. Punjabis across Canada and beyond take pride in Jagrup Brar’s accomplishments and wish him continued success in his political journey.
