Ottawa, April 6
The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced province-wise allocation of study permits. It is part of a national cap on study permit applications announced by the Immigration Minister Marc Miller on January 22.
The IRCC has set a target of 485,000 study permits for the year of 2024. The decision has been taken to address the rapid increase of international students in Canada.
In a press statement, Marc Miller said, “About 20% of students apply for an extension each year and remain in the country. Therefore, IRCC subtracted that amount (97,000) from the target of 485,000 and set aside a small buffer to allow for other variations, resulting in a revised target of 364,000 approved study permits in 2024.”
The IRCC said it has distributed the adjusted number of study permit applications, 393,000, based on the population share of each province and territory.
As per the methodology adopted by the IRCC, Quebec has been allocated 117,917 study permits. Meanwhile, British Columbia can welcome up to 40,894 students in its private and public institutes.
