Charlottetown – Indian students in Prince Edward Island, Canada, protesting recent immigration policy changes have decided to pause their hunger strike. The decision followed a meeting with Jeff Young, director of the provincial Office of Immigration. The hunger strike began on May 24 and has now entered its second week.
Rupinder Pal Singh, a protest leader with a work permit expiring on July 14, announced the pause, stating that Young encouraged them to halt the strike while the government considers their demands. The group has been protesting in Charlottetown since May 9, and many began the hunger strike over a week ago on the lawn in front of the George Coles Building, where the P.E.I. Legislature is located. On Tuesday night, some protesters also stopped drinking liquids to intensify their demonstration.
