Surrey, B.C. — A man is in custody following a tense overnight standoff involving gunfire at a hotel in Surrey’s Whalley neighbourhood.
Shortly after 10:00 p.m. on June 24, Surrey Police Service (SPS) Frontline officers responded to a request for a wellness check on a man staying in a suite at a hotel in the 12400 block of King George Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers discovered that the man was armed and had barricaded himself inside the room.
As a precaution, nearby hotel guests were evacuated while the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team (LMD ERT) was called in to assist.
At approximately 12:30 a.m., officers reported hearing gunshots coming from within the suite. According to police, the shots appeared to be fired toward the outside of the building. No injuries were reported from the gunfire.
Shortly before 1:00 a.m., the suspect was safely taken into custody with the assistance of LMD ERT and the Integrated Police Dog Services. He was transported to hospital for evaluation, where he remains under police custody.
The Surrey Police Service’s Frontline Investigative Support Team (FLIST) has now taken over the investigation.
Authorities have not released the man’s identity, and charges have not yet been announced. Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact SPS.
