Burnaby, BC – A driver was issued a $109 ticket under Section 195(1)(a) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act for “driving while controls obstructed” after being spotted holding a dog while driving on Lougheed Highway near Production Way.
BC Highway Patrol reminds drivers that distractions—whether a pet, mounted phone, or hanging object—can have serious consequences.
“Driving is a complex task. You need all of your attention for unexpected lane changes, pedestrians, weather and obstacles,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin of BC Highway Patrol. “Having a dog on your lap is illegal and a minor collision could kill your best friend. It’s best if pets are belted in properly, ideally with a harness in the rear passenger seat, just like a human child.”
In addition to unrestrained pets, other common but illegal behaviours that obstruct a driver’s view include:
- Mounting a cellphone on the windshield;
- Hanging fuzzy dice, air fresheners, or placing tissue boxes that block the view;
- Using blankets, privacy screens, or tinting on front side windows ahead of the B pillar.
“We want everyone to give driving the respect it deserves,” said Corporal McLaughlin. “You are much more likely to avoid a ticket and the physical and emotional consequences of a crash.”
