Abbotsford – A semi-truck collision forced the closure of Highway 1 eastbound at Whatcom Road Monday morning, causing major traffic delays. Abbotsford Police said the crash involved no other vehicles, but traffic was diverted off Whatcom Road and back onto the highway. Westbound lanes were reduced to a single lane while crews cleared the scene.
No injuries were reported, but the driver of the semi-truck was arrested and detained by police as part of an impaired driving investigation. Authorities say more details will be released as the investigation continues.
This incident is the third serious truck crash to hit Lower Mainland highways in just 24 hours. On Sunday, one semi was left dangling over train tracks on Highway 1, while another struck an overpass at Whatcom Road. Later, a semi overturned on a sharp corner in Langley posted at just 10 km/h.
“These are not random accidents,” said Harman Bhangu MLA for Langley-Abbotsford . “It’s the result of systemic failures — overworked drivers, lax enforcement, and a government that looks the other way.”
The string of crashes has renewed calls for stronger enforcement and improved safety measures in B.C.’s trucking industry.
