Hope, B.C. – September 3, 2025: The Coquihalla Highway (Highway 5) is closed in both directions between Merritt and six kilometres north of Hope as crews battle the fast-moving Mine Creek wildfire. The blaze, which has been generating a towering pyrocumulus cloud and heavy smoke, is now impacting visibility across the region, with smoke drifting toward the Kelowna area.
DriveBC reports that there is no estimated time for reopening the highway. Motorists are advised to use Highway 1 or Highway 3 as alternate routes. Commercial vehicles are prohibited from using Highway 8.
The wildfire’s intensity has made it visible on radar, and nearby DriveBC traffic cameras show thick smoke blanketing the area. Officials are urging drivers to plan ahead, monitor updates, and avoid the area if possible.
