December 5, 2025 – Burnaby, B.C. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has announced a major drug seizure after officers uncovered 209 kilograms of opium hidden in an inbound shipping container at the Burnaby Container Examination Facility.
The discovery was made on March 26, 2025, when CBSA border officers, assisted by the agency’s Detector Dog Team, examined a container that had arrived from the United Arab Emirates. The shipment was flagged for inspection by intelligence officers at the CBSA National Targeting Centre, prompting a closer look.
Inside, officers found the narcotics concealed within an 11,000-kilogram piece of commercial machinery — a method commonly used by organized criminal networks to evade detection. The significant seizure underscores the crucial role of intelligence-led border screening and specialized detection teams in intercepting illicit goods before they reach Canadian communities.
The CBSA confirms that the investigation remains ongoing.
