Surrey- The BC NDP has announced its support for TransLink’s plan to build a new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line along King George Boulevard, connecting Surrey and White Rock. The proposal includes extending the R1 RapidBus route beyond its current terminus at the Newton bus exchange and implementing bus-only lanes and other priority infrastructure along the 23 km King George Boulevard corridor.
Currently, the R1 RapidBus serves an 11 km stretch between Guildford Town Centre and the Newton bus exchange, with key stops at Surrey Central Station and King George Station. The BRT expansion would extend the service all the way to White Rock, providing faster, more efficient travel options for commuters in the growing region.
“Surrey is growing, and more people are commuting every day,” said Jessie Sunner, BC NDP candidate for Surrey-Newton. “Whether it’s for work, visiting loved ones, or running errands, the BC NDP believes you shouldn’t be stuck in traffic. We’re ensuring people in Surrey have more options to get where they need to go as quickly as possible.”
Both the BC NDP and Conservative Party of BC have highlighted transportation infrastructure in their platforms, with promises for improved commuter and regional rail services across the Lower Mainland.
