Vancouver, B.C. – BC Hydro customers will see a 3.75% annual rate increase over the next two years, starting April 1, 2025, as part of the company’s latest rate adjustment filing with the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC).
For the average residential household, which currently pays approximately $100 per month, this increase will result in an additional $3.75 per month on their electricity bill. Despite the adjustments, BC Hydro emphasizes that electricity costs in B.C. remain among the lowest in North America, approximately half of what Alberta residents pay.
The rate adjustments are aimed at ensuring BC Hydro can continue investing in critical renewable energy infrastructure to support B.C.’s economy and energy independence. The government highlights that BC Hydro’s cumulative rate increases from 2017-18 to 2026-27 will remain 12.4% below cumulative inflation, maintaining affordability for British Columbians.
“We must take urgent action to protect British Columbians from the uncertainty posed by rising costs while building a strong, robust, and resilient electricity system for the benefit of B.C.’s long-term energy independence,” said Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions. “That is why we are submitting a rate stability direction to the B.C. Utilities Commission (BCUC) to set BC Hydro’s rate increases for the next two years.”
The rate increases will take effect on April 1, 2025, and April 1, 2026.
