Montreal – Air Canada has announced plans for a phased suspension of flights in preparation for a potential work stoppage by its flight attendants starting Saturday.
The airline says cancellations will begin Thursday, increase on Friday, and culminate in a full shutdown of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flights by the weekend. Services under Air Canada Express, operated by Jazz and PAL Airlines, will continue as scheduled.
Passengers affected by cancellations will be notified and offered full refunds. The airline has also arranged with other domestic and international carriers to assist customers with alternative travel options where possible.
The move follows a 72-hour strike notice issued Wednesday by the union representing roughly 10,000 flight attendants. Air Canada responded with a lockout notice, citing stalled contract negotiations.
“We regret the impact a disruption will have on our customers, our stakeholders and the communities we serve,” said Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau.
Negotiations between the two sides broke down Tuesday, with the company reporting they remain far apart on key issues.
