Surrey- The City of Surrey is taking major steps to support the long-term growth of local health-care facilities, including Surrey Memorial Hospital and the new Surrey Hospital and BC Cancer Centre in Cloverdale. At Monday’s Council meeting, officials approved zoning amendments that will streamline potential expansion at Surrey Memorial Hospital and endorsed a transportation plan to improve access to the new Cloverdale hospital.

Mayor Brenda Locke said Surrey must stay ahead of the rapid population growth to ensure hospitals can meet future demand. She noted that removing barriers to expansion and enhancing transportation connections will help secure accessible, high-quality care for residents in the years ahead.

The approved bylaw amendments eliminate the need for future rezoning at Surrey Memorial Hospital, making it easier and faster for any upcoming project to proceed. While no specific expansion plans have been finalized, the changes provide flexibility for a wide range of future development.

In Cloverdale, a comprehensive transportation plan has been approved to ensure safe and efficient access when the new hospital opens in 2030. Fraser Health will upgrade key roads, intersections, and pedestrian and cycling routes surrounding the site. The City will build a new multiuse path along 180 Street between 55 Avenue and 56 Avenue, as well as new bikeways connecting existing greenways and bike lanes to 180 Street and Highway 10. These improvements will create a safer, continuous network for cyclists and pedestrians accessing the hospital.

The City will also collaborate with TransLink to strengthen transit access between the hospital and SkyTrain. Options being considered include re-routed bus services or new routes, such as a direct link connecting the hospital, the future 184 Street Surrey–Langley SkyTrain Station, and Campbell Heights.

These coordinated efforts aim to ensure both hospital sites can serve Surrey’s growing population efficiently and effectively in the years to come.
