Abbotsford, BC – November 25, 2025 – The Abbotsford Police Department’s Patrol Branch has officially expanded its Bait Property Program after a highly successful year-long pilot. What began as a limited initiative is now a core strategy used by frontline officers to better identify and target individuals responsible for property crime.

The program uses GPS-enabled bait items, including bicycles, tools, and equipment, placed in areas where thefts are more frequent. Once stolen, these items assist police in quickly locating suspects and making arrests. The project was funded through the Province of BC Civil Forfeiture Office’s police equipment grants, allowing the department to operate the program at no additional cost to Abbotsford taxpayers.

Property crimes involving tools, equipment, and bicycles can have significant consequences for residents who may not be able to afford replacements. By focusing on repeat offenders, the Bait Property Program aims to reduce these crimes and improve overall community safety.

During the pilot year, officers conducted 37 deployments, which led to 11 arrests. Fifteen of these deployments used older bait items, while 22 used newly purchased equipment funded through the Civil Forfeiture grant. With the upgraded items, arrests were made in more than 30 percent of deployments. The program has also resulted in 11 guilty pleas, which has reduced court time for officers and spared victims from having to testify.

“These results show that the program is working,” said Sergeant Alton. “We’re holding repeat offenders accountable while protecting our community from the financial and emotional impact of property crime.”

The Abbotsford Police Department says it will continue to prioritize innovative strategies that reduce crime, enhance public safety, and ensure offenders face appropriate consequences.
