Surrey, BC — The BC RCMP says a significant breakthrough has been made in a Surrey shooting investigation, with Crown Counsel approving a charge against a 21-year-old suspect following extensive work by the BC Extortion Task Force.
The charge stems from a shooting reported on November 12, 2025, around 7:35 p.m., when Surrey RCMP’s Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) responded to reports of shots fired at a home in the 17000 block of 32 Avenue. Officers from the Surrey Police Service (SPS) also attended, and a public alert was issued that evening.
The BC Extortion Task Force took over the investigation, working with multiple policing and law enforcement partners as part of a broader series of related incidents involving one primary victim.
Following the evidence gathered, the BC Prosecution Service has approved one count of unlawfully discharging a firearm, contrary to Section 244.2(3)(a) of the Criminal Code, against Avtar Singh, 21.
Singh was arrested on December 5, 2025 and remains in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for December 10, 2025.
Despite the charge, police emphasize that the investigation is far from over.
“The BC Extortion Task Force has been working hard to advance investigations and secure charges,” said Assistant Commissioner John Brewer, BC RCMP. “While this charge approval signifies a strong step forward, please know that we are not done. Through our evidence-based investigations and strategic, intelligence-led operations, we are committed to pursuing those who commit violent acts and are involved in extortions to hold them accountable.”
The BC RCMP notes that investigators continue to follow established evidence-collection protocols and are working with partners at the local, provincial, and federal levels. Task Force members are also assessing whether this case is linked to any other ongoing files.
Police urge anyone with additional information to contact their local detachment, as further details could support the active and ongoing investigation.
