Surrey, B.C. – Surrey is taking a major step toward becoming a regional leader in agricultural technology through a new partnership with Simon Fraser University, announced at the Mayor’s Forum on the Future of Agriculture.
The City of Surrey and SFU have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish the SFU Frontier Hub, a cutting-edge centre for agritech research, innovation, and technology development. The hub will support farmers in adopting modern tools and sustainable practices while advancing food security, economic diversification, and long-term competitiveness within the agricultural sector.
“Surrey is looking to become a leader in agricultural innovation in this region,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “But leading doesn’t mean leaving traditional farming behind. Our partnership with SFU will give farmers the tools they need to innovate, grow sustainably, and build a stronger local food system to benefit families and the economy alike.”
Under the agreement, the City will provide approximately 10 acres of Agricultural Land Reserve land through a long-term, low-cost lease and assist with zoning, permitting, and regulatory processes. SFU will oversee the design and development of the hub, lead applied research initiatives, and secure grants and external investment to support its growth.
“Simon Fraser University is proud to partner with the City of Surrey on the creation of the SFU Frontier Hub for Agritech Research and Methodology,” said Dr. Joy Johnson, SFU president. “This new hub will accelerate agritech research, innovation, and commercialization in British Columbia and beyond, with a focus on precision agriculture and smart farming technologies.”
Coun. Harry Bains, chair of Surrey’s Investment, Innovation and Business Committee, emphasized the practical impact for farming families: “Coming from a farming family, I know how challenging it is to make a living from the land. This agreement will support practical research and demonstration projects, giving farmers real-world opportunities to apply agritech solutions and strengthen their operations.”
The new Frontier Hub builds on Surrey’s growing agritech strategy, which is positioning the city at the forefront of modern farming innovation. By leveraging farmland, research expertise, talent, and industry collaboration, Surrey aims to create a future-ready and resilient food system with lasting economic and environmental benefits.
