SURREY, B.C. — The City of Surrey is launching a reservation system for a pilot project at Surrey Public Wharf, providing families with a designated waterfront space to hold memorial ash scattering ceremonies.
The initiative responds to community requests for a respectful location to honour loved ones and reflects Surrey’s diverse cultural and faith traditions.
Families will be required to reserve a date and time in advance through an online booking form on the City of Surrey website, beginning Sept. 21.
Surrey Public Wharf was selected following technical review, community engagement and an environmental assessment. Park improvements have also been made to support ceremonies and other park users.
City Council directed staff in 2024 to identify a suitable Fraser River location, with funding approved through the 2025 capital budget. Engagement with the Indigenous community remains ongoing.
Mayor Brenda Locke said the project aims to balance cultural inclusion, environmental stewardship and shared public use of the waterfront.
