Vancouver, BC – May 22, 2025 — The City of Vancouver has officially welcomed Steve Rai as the new Chief Constable of the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), marking a historic and momentous occasion for the city’s law enforcement leadership.
Announced by Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim, Chief Rai becomes the 32nd person — and one of the most accomplished officers — to hold the top policing role in the city.
“I’m excited to welcome Steve Rai as the 32nd Chief Constable of the Vancouver Police Department,” said Mayor Sim. “Chief Rai brings more than three decades of experience with the VPD as a decorated officer, a trailblazer, and a leader who embodies what it means to serve and protect Vancouverites.”
Chief Rai’s career is as distinguished as it is inspirational. Born in Punjab, India, he immigrated to Vancouver at a young age with his family. Before joining the VPD, he served in the Canadian Forces Reserves while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Asian Studies from the University of British Columbia. He later earned a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice from the University of the Fraser Valley.
Rai began his policing career in 1990, serving eight years as a frontline patrol constable in District 3, where he not only handled day-to-day policing duties but also mentored new officers and built strong ties with the district’s diverse communities.
“I am fully confident that Chief Rai’s track record as an effective commander and respected bridge builder will leave a positive impact on the VPD, and Vancouver as a whole, for years to come,” added Mayor Sim.
Chief Rai’s appointment is being celebrated as both a recognition of dedicated service and a reflection of Vancouver’s growing diversity in leadership. As he steps into this role, the city looks forward to the leadership, integrity, and community-focused approach he brings to one of Canada’s most prominent police departments.
