Ottawa, ON – Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre issued an urgent call for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reopen Parliament in response to the looming threat of 25% tariffs on Canadian imports by the U.S., which could take effect on February 1.
In a press release, Poilievre criticized the Liberal government for proroguing Parliament during what he called a “critical challenge.” He warned that the tariffs could have devastating consequences for Canada’s economy, particularly with 75% of exports reliant on the U.S.
Poilievre accused the Liberals of neglecting border security and delaying a multibillion-dollar border control plan. “We need retaliatory tariffs, something that requires urgent Parliamentary consideration,” he stated, adding that the Liberals are putting their leadership ambitions ahead of national interests.
He urged Trudeau to cut prorogation short and reconvene Parliament to address border controls, trade retaliation, and an economic recovery plan.
