Toronto, ON – Ontario is introducing the Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act, 2025, bringing stronger rules to improve safety and accountability in the province’s trucking industry.
“Today we introduced the Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act — taking action to strengthen Ontario’s trucking and road safety system,” said Hardeep Grewal, MPP and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation. “These are common-sense changes that protect families, support honest drivers, and keep Ontario’s roads safe for everyone.”
The new legislation will require visa and work permit verification for all commercial licence applicants, end automatic foreign licence recognition from non-reciprocal countries, and ban visitors from obtaining commercial driver’s licences. It will also introduce a mandatory one-year Canadian driving experience before qualifying for a Class A licence.
Applicants must prove valid work eligibility in Canada, and a waiting period will now apply between earning a Class G licence and advancing to a Class A commercial licence.
Officials say the reforms will strengthen integrity in the licensing process and help ensure only qualified, experienced drivers operate trucks on Ontario roads.
