Vanderhoof, B.C. – A new chapter in British Columbia’s mining industry began with the official opening of the Blackwater Mine, the province’s latest gold and silver operation, developed by Artemis Gold Inc.
Located south of Vanderhoof, the Blackwater Mine represents a significant economic and environmental milestone for the region. The facility was completed in just 22 months and is already generating hundreds of quality jobs, providing a boost to nearby communities affected by recent industrial downturns.
At the grand opening, Jagrup Brar, B.C.’s Minister of Mining and Critical Minerals, praised the project’s impact. “It’s not every day we open a brand-new gold mine in British Columbia,” he said. “This is a proud moment for Artemis Gold, for workers, Indigenous partners, and the entire region.”
The mine has set a new benchmark in sustainable development. By connecting the site to the BC Hydro grid, Artemis eliminated the use of diesel and propane in its processing operations, relying instead on clean electricity to reduce emissions and environmental impact.
The opening also highlighted the company’s strong partnerships with Indigenous communities, which have played a key role throughout the development of the project. Minister Brar emphasized the importance of this collaboration, noting that reconciliation and responsible economic growth can go hand in hand.
Blackwater Mine stands as a model for modern mining in B.C., balancing resource development with environmental stewardship and community engagement.
With mining already supporting around 40,000 jobs across the province, and several other major projects underway, British Columbia is positioning itself as a global leader in clean and responsible mining.
