New Delhi, August 23, 2025: The Department of Posts has announced the temporary suspension of all postal services to the United States, effective August 25, 2025. This decision follows an executive order issued by the U.S. administration on July 30, 2025, withdrawing the duty-free exemption for goods valued up to USD 800 starting August 29, 2025.
As per the new rules, all international postal consignments to the U.S. will now be subject to customs duties under the International Emergency Economic Power Act (IEEPA) tariff framework. However, letters, documents, and gift parcels worth up to USD 100 will remain exempt from customs charges and will continue to be accepted.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has also mandated that postal carriers collect and remit duties on shipments, but key procedural details remain undefined, leading U.S.-bound carriers to express inability to process shipments beyond August 25.
India Post has assured that it is working with stakeholders to restore normal services at the earliest. Customers who have booked shipments outside the exempt categories are eligible for refunds of postage.
